Sir Earle Page
Earle Page was born in Grafton in 1880 and returned as a doctor after studying medicine in Sydney. He built a country practice and established a private hospital, bringing modern equipment into local medical work. He later became mayor of South Grafton and advocated regional development, including hydro-electricity. His federal political career culminated in a brief term as prime minister in April 1939 after Joseph Lyons died. The Grafton connection spans birth, medicine and local government: a much longer association than his short spell leading the country.
